Demystifying ESG: Practical Considerations and Approaches for Implementation

Join WAVE’s New York Chapter on May 11 at 3:00 pm EDT for an ESG discussion with speakers from APG, Seward & Kissel, Siris Capital Group, and New Mountain Capital. The discussion will focus on the nuts and bolts of ESG implementation at both the manager and portfolio company level, including how to approach ESG at every stage - from governance to monitoring and the use of metrics to LP reporting.

About our Speakers:

Moderator: Debra Franzese, Partner, Seward & Kissel
Debbie is a partner in the Investment Management group who focuses on providing practical and results-oriented legal and regulatory advice. She works with sponsors and managers of various private investment funds and other pooled investment vehicles, including hedge funds, private equity funds, funds of funds, commodity pools, co-investment vehicles and various “hybrid” funds. In particular, Debbie focuses on fund formation and structuring, the offering of interests by private investment funds, and the negotiation and documentation of such investments. Debbie has experience in organizing both domestic and offshore partnerships and other investment vehicles, including separately managed accounts established for institutional investors. She has significant experience advising clients regarding regulatory and compliance matters, including the availability of exemptions from registration for both U.S. and non-U.S. investment advisers, the development of compliance policies and procedures, the completion of regulatory filings, and assistance with regulatory examinations. Debbie also represents investment advisers in connection with seed-capital investments and side letters and represents funds of funds and other institutional investors in connection with their investments in private funds. She has also assisted clients with the completion of non-U.S. regulatory filings, including those required in connection with AIFMD.

Debbie was instrumental in the formation of the Firm’s ESG practice, spearheading a task force dedicated to staying at the forefront of the ESG issues affecting investment managers. Debbie also completed a Sustainable Capitalism & ESG course through US Berkeley School of Law in Spring 2021.

Debbie received a B.A. from Stockton University, summa cum laude, and her J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law, magna cum laude. 

Tracy Harris, Partner - Investor Relations & Product Strategy, Siris Capital Group
Ms. Harris joined Siris in 2019. She was most recently a Partner at StepStone Group, where she served as a senior member of the small buyout, growth equity and venture capital sector teams and led the firm’s ESG strategy. Prior to joining StepStone, Ms. Harris was Vice President, Customized Fund Investment Group, at Grosvenor Capital Management (and the predecessor business at Credit Suisse). During her tenure at Grosvenor and Credit Suisse, Ms. Harris helped manage the in-state and emerging private equity investment programs. Prior to her time at Grosvenor, Ms. Harris spent eight years with Parish Capital Advisors, ultimately serving as Partner, co-leading the investment process and investor relations. Ms. Harris received her BA from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, with Phi Beta Kappa honors.

Pamela Kauppila, ESG Consultant, New Mountain Capital
Pamela Kauppila, an ESG Consultant, began working with New Mountain Capital in the summer of 2020 through the Climate Corp. Fellowship Program of the Environmental Defense Fund.  She is currently working on expanding ESG initiatives across the firm and driving sustainability initiatives at specific portfolio companies. Previously, Ms. Kauppila was an equity analyst at Gilder Gagnon Howe & Co. for 7 years where, as a generalist, she analyzed growth stocks across a range of industry sectors. Prior to that, she spent nearly two years at Goldman Sachs in the AIMS Private Equity Group, a fund-of-funds. As part of the Client Portfolio Solutions team she was responsible for product management, focusing on distressed debt funds, and client management covering endowments and foundations among others. Before that she spent 13 years at BNP Paribas as an analyst on the Distressed Debt team and a VP on the Leveraged Lending Desk before moving to the Private Equity Group where she managed the bank’s portfolio of private equity fund investments. She earned an MBA in Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University and is currently completing a Master’s degree at Columbia University in the Sustainability Management program. Her professional experience, across credit, private equity and public equity, has honed her research skills through years of financial modeling and data analysis, while her coursework has provided a framework for identifying and addressing sustainability issues.

Keren Raz, Senior Responsible Investment Specialist, APG Asset Management
Keren G. Raz is a Senior Responsible Investment Specialist at APG Asset Management. In that role, she serves as the global responsible investment lead for private equity, hedge funds, and alternative credits, working closely with investment teams on the integration of environmental, social, and governance factors. Prior to joining APG, Keren was the Head of Environmental and Social Risk Management at Morgan Stanley, overseeing the Firm’s management of franchise risk related to environmental and social issues including climate change and human rights. Previously, Keren worked at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and as a Senior ESG Advisor to Apollo Global Management. She also served as New York University School of Law’s first Social Enterprise Fellow, studying legal issues faced by social enterprises.  Her article, titled “Toward an Improved Legal Form for Social Enterprise”, was published in the New York University Review of Law & Social Change.

Ms. Raz received her J.D. cum laude from New York University School of Law and a certificate through Columbia University’s inaugural Sustainable Investing Certificate program. Ms. Raz graduated summa cum laude with honors from the University of Arizona.
